What is BAS
BAS is an acronym that stands for Benchmark Assessment System. It is a program that assess a student’s reading level. The levels range alphabetically from A to Z, with level A representing the lowest level and level Z the highest. Levels are not grade specific.
How is a BAS level determined?
Students read a text in a one on one reading session with the teacher. They begin reading aloud (as the teacher scores their oral reading), then finish up silently to themselves and finally answer several comprehension questions. What are the expected BAS levels for 4th grade?
Students are tested 3 times a year, below is the average expected level at each time of year.
Beginning of the year: Q
Middle of the year: R
End of year: S

How much growth is expected?
Students typically move up one letter each testing period. So, in the fall if you tested at Q the expectation would be you move to R by the winter testing period.

- A student has to receive a 95% or higher accuracy level for decoding. Decoding is the ability to apply knowledge of letter-sound relationships and letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words.
- A student has to receive a sore of 5-7 (satisfactory or excellent) in comprehension skills. Comprehension is the ability to answer questions about the text, beyond the text and about the author’s purpose.
